Gary & Julie live with their two young children in their own home. They have been struggling with high energy bills as well as living costs. They learned about our service at a local event and reached out directly to see what support we could offer them. Their income consists of a single wage and some benefits as one of their children has a disability, Julie cares for her children full-time.
Their boiler is old and they have been unable to afford to have it serviced for some years. They are worried it might break down over winter.
One of our energy advisors visited the couple to see how we could help. We confirmed that they were receiving the correct benefits, checked that they know to apply for the Warm Home Discount and signed them up to the Priority Services Register.
We also provided advice about their home energy use to identify ways they could save around the home. This advice would help them stay warm at home while reducing how much they spent on their energy costs.
Julie was worried about their old gas boiler as they could not afford to pay for its service. Although it was still working, they were worried it could breakdown at any time. We explained the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), what to do if the alarm goes off and checked there was one in her property. We discussed the importance of servicing their appliance to protect their family from these risks.
Due to the vulnerabilities in their household, they met the criteria for a free gas service through our Safe and Warm Servicing scheme, so we collected some evidence and made a referral straight away.
Following the initial phone call, we arranged for them to receive some small energy efficiency measures through our handy service. These items along with the energy-saving tips we provided have helped them save money and feel warmer at home. We also identified that they might be eligible for a grant through the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme for energy efficiency improvements. We made a referral to Home Energy Scotland to assess this.
Since our referrals, they have now had their boiler serviced by our partners at the Community Heating Project. They are feeling more confident going into the winter knowing that it is working fine.
They have also had a survey for Warmer Homes Scotland and are waiting to hear the next steps. Julie was happy with the support we gave her and her family. It has helped them feel safer and more comfortable in their home.
