Kelly lives alone in a rented Fife Council flat. She has been dealing with chronic health issues and mental health challenges. Recent treatment for cancer has affected her wellbeing. Kelly found it difficult to keep on top of her energy use and costs. She contacted us for advice because she had multiple top-up cards, which made it confusing and difficult to track payments. She was concerned about her financial situation and ability to maintain energy payments as winter approached.
One of our energy advisors visited Kelly at home. We spoke to her gas and electricity suppliers and identified the correct top-up cards for her to use, advising her to safely discard the unnecessary ones to prevent future confusion.
Due to her vulnerability, we registered her for the Priority Services Register. This ensured she received priority support from her energy suppliers during outages.
While at her home we identified that she was running low on credit on her meters. We made a referral for her to receive a fuel voucher from the Fuel Bank Foundation.
Our energy advisor identified several measures from our handy service to be installed into her property to retain the heat and reduce energy consumption by increasing energy efficiency.
She was also referred to our Income Maximisation Worker to explore potential entitlements that could provide additional financial support.
Kelly told us that the support she received improved her understanding of her energy accounts. This reduced her confusion and stress. The improvements carried out by our handyperson made her home a lot warmer and safer.
Kelly was delighted to learn that she was eligible for Adult Disability Payment. She was grateful for our support to help her apply for this payment from Social Security Scotland. The award would improve her financial resilience and help her to keep her heating running through the winter.
