The Adamson’s Story

At a recent gathering of a group in Dunfermline, one of our Energy Advisors delivered a talk to share advice on keeping homes warm and comfortable. Among the information the advisor offered to the group, it was mentioned that we can help identify grants and funding that local homeowners could benefit from to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Mr and Mrs Adamson, both retired, were interested in upgrading their ageing boiler and requested a home visit from our advisor.

We met with the couple at a time that worked best for them. During the home visit, we learned that they were living with an old, inefficient heating system. They were also living with some health issues that put them at risk of living in a colder home.

Our advisor provided some useful advice to help them stay warm and well at home. We also learned Mr and Mrs Adamson were not in receipt of any benefits that would qualify for them for funding.

Knowing that there might be support the couple could claim that would increase their income but also qualify them for a grant, we connected Mr and Mrs Adamson with our Healthy Heating Advisor to complete a benefit check. The check was later completed and we supported them to apply for Attendance Allowance. This is a a benefit for older people who need extra assistance with health issues.

Once the Attendance Allowance application was approved, Mr and Mrs Adamson met the criteria for a new heating upgrade through the Warmer Home Scotland scheme. We made a referral to Home Energy Scotland to confirm their couple’s eligibility for the grant.

Home Energy Scotland assessed for and confirmed eligibility for the scheme and a referral was made to install a new energy-efficient combi boiler, heating controls and new radiators into their home.

Mr and Mrs Adamson were pleased with their new efficient heating system and all the advice they had received. They noticed an improvement in their health and wellbeing, knowing that they can now keep their home at a healthy temperature during the colder months.

As well as living in a warm and comfortable home, Attendance Allowance offered a boost to their incoming. This made it easier to manage their household costs and budgets while they enjoy their retirement. Mrs Adamson told us the support she had received was “life-changing”.
