Plug-in Solar


As energy prices remain high, more households across Fife are looking for simple, accessible ways to generate their own clean electricity.

While traditional roof-mounted Solar PV is a great way to generate your own electricity, not all homes can have it mounted on the roof and for others, there may be concerns around cost or available funding.

Following a UK government announcement, plug-in solar panels will become legal in the UK from August 27th 2026, which opens up a new avenue for households to explore renewable technology solutions for their home.

What is plug-in solar?

Plug-in solar systems are small-scale solar photovoltaics (PV) designed for easy installation. Unlike standard rooftop solar, which requires extensive wiring and roof mounting, a plug-in system is much simpler.

Plug-in solar is often known as balcony solar, a name originating from mainland Europe, where they are very common on balconies in countries like Germany.

The plug-and-play kit consists of:

  • 1 or 2 solar panels:  which can be placed on a balcony, patio, garden, flat garage roof, or wall mount.

  • A microinverter: A small device attached to the back of the panel that converts the direct current (DC) electricity generated by the panel into standard alternating current (AC) used in your home.

  • A standard power cable: Plugs directly into a traditional 3-pin socket, putting power straight into your home.

When sunlight hits the panels, electricity flows through the inverter into your home’s electrical circuit. Your household appliances will automatically use this free solar energy first before pulling additional power through your meter.

How does it work?

Plug-in Solar can be installed easily by yourself in your garden, on a balcony or a shed roof. You simply put them in a spot that gets a lot of sunlight, plug it into your mains through a traditional 3-pin plug, and when the sun hits the panel, electricity is generated.

For those technically minded, the panel produces ‘DC electricity’; this is why you have a micro-inverter that converts this into ‘AC electricity’, which is the type of electricity we use in our homes.

The power generated by your panel goes through your wall socket and into the circuits around your home, being consumed by any appliances you have on, reducing what you need to pull from the grid.

Who can benefit from plug-in solar?

This technology is a game-changer. Traditional solar PV was restricted to owner-occupiers or landlords installing them on their properties. They were somewhat costly and required professional installers.

Plug-in solar makes renewable technology accessible to those renting their own accommodation and those who live in flats who do not have access to a roof to mount them. There’s very little installation involved, so it can often be installed yourself.

If you move home, you just unplug them and take them away with you!

Will plug-in solar save me money?

Plug-in solar systems are small-scale, so they won’t generate as much energy as roof-top solar. They can, however, be easily designed to cover your home’s baseload energy demand, which is the constant background electricity consumed by appliances that stay on all day, such as:

  • Refrigerators and freezers

  • Broadband routers and Wi-Fi extenders

  • TV set-top boxes and devices on standby

  • Home office equipment

A typical 400W–800W plug-in solar kit in Scotland could generate between 300 kWh and 650 kWh of electricity per year, depending on sunlight exposure, angle, and shading.

Because electricity generated is used immediately in real time, shifting daily chores like running washing machines or dishwashers to bright daytime hours will help you get the most out of your system.

Government analysis suggests a compliant 800W system could cut a household’s electricity bill by around £70 to £110 a year. However, savings will depend heavily on where the panels are placed and how the household uses energy.

How do I know plug-in solar is right for me?

There are a few things you should check before purchasing the kit;

South-facing panels usually generate the most electricity. East- or west-facing panels can still work, but shaded or north-facing spaces may produce much less, you should check you have an area suitable for placing your panels to ensure you can benefit from your new technology.

Whether you need permission. Renters, leaseholders and flat owners may need permission from a landlord, freeholder, managing agent or building owner before fixing panels to a balcony, wall or shared exterior space. Always ask first!

A solar panel fixed to a balcony or wall needs to be safe in wind and bad weather. It should not create a risk to people below, you should make sure you can mount this safely and securely.

Consider if and where you can plug it in, avoid trailing cables through windows, across walkways or into places where they could be damaged. Outdoor electrical equipment needs to be used safely. You may need an electrician to install an outside socket, for example, first.

The panels will be a worthwhile investment only if you can save energy that you are already using during daylight hours. Do you use enough during the day to justify the cost?

 

Where can I get it?

Plug-in Solar will be available at many stores you’re used to shopping at after August 27th. We would recommend not purchasing kit in advance of this date as it may not be legally compliant with UK regulations.
