Challenge Poverty Week 2026

Challenge Poverty Week is 5th-11th October 2026.

Cosy Kingdom supports The Poverty Alliance’s awareness-raising week, which was first launched in 2013 – the same year the Cosy Kingdom Partnership was formed.

Challenge Poverty Week highlights the injustice of poverty in Scotland and shows that collective action based on justice and compassion can create solutions. We hope you join us in raising your voice against poverty and calling for a just and equal Scotland.

More than ever before, as a result of the cost-of-living crisis and fossil fuel price shocks people are finding themselves struggling with their energy bills.

How Cosy Kingdom tackles poverty in Fife

We believe that everyone should have access to a safe, warm and sustainable home that meets their needs.

Fuel Poverty is a relevant issue in Scotland and it’s currently thought that around 1 in 3 houses in Fife are classed as being in Fuel Poverty, where a household is spending more than 10% of their annual income on heating their homes. This can often lead to people facing difficult choices such wheather to cook a hot meal or heat their homes. Our energy advisors see these challenges on a daily basis and work to support people to move through fuel poverty.

We also recognise that fuel poverty doesn’t happen in isolation, and whether people need support with their income, families, mental health or a range of other poverty-related challenges we can connect them with partner organisations in Fife who are best placed to support them.

You can read our 2025 annual feedback survey findings to find out how our participants benefited from our service.

In 2024 we commissioned an independant a Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis to show the true value of the support Cosy Kingdom brings to Fife.

What is fuel poverty

Most people would be unlikely to identify themselves as being in fuel poverty, they’re more likely to think:

  • I can’t pay my gas bill / top up my meter
  • I can’t afford to turn on the heating
  • My home is always damp or cold
  • I’m always ill

The causes for these can be complex, however, fuel poverty can be due to:

  • Low income
  • High fuel costs
  • Energy inefficient homes
